The article focuses on the strategic objectives of the Russian Federation development and the role of the commodity sector of the economy in their solution. It is shown that the most important tool for achieving the goals set in the May 2018 Decree of the President of the Russian Federation and solving relevant problems is a resource-innovative development strategy based on using the potential of resource industries, domestic science, innovations and new technologies. The paper states the essence and principles of the resource and innovation strategy where the oil and gas complex of the country as a \u00abdonor\u00bb of the Russian economy objectively plays a key role in its implementation.
